Stem cell controversy

There has been much written about the stem cell controversy of using embryonic stem cells in medicine for people and animals. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent stem cells derived from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst, an early-stage embryo. This article is not about the pros and cons of using embryonic stem cells or invasive stem cell therapies. In dogs and horses stem cells are taken from fat or bone marrow, cleansed in a machine and then injected back into the animal. This also happens in people but the FDA recently won a case against one such method in people. Again, this article is not about the ethics of such methods.

This article will explain that neither of the above stem cell therapies are needed. There is a cheaper and natural way to increase the number of adult stem cells in the blood. It is scientific consensus that low numbers of adult stem cells equates to poor health and vitality. When they die through a process called apoptosis or programmed cell death they are replaced by adult stem cells. When they are dieing or damaged cells release a chemical called Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor (GCST) that goes to the bone marrow and tells adult stem cells to duplicate and release the new adult stem cells into the circulation. They are then attracted to the damaged cells by other molecules. They travel through the capillary walls to the damaged cells and then differentiate into those damaged cells. This is the natural renewal and repair of the body.

What is disease?

Cells form tissues and organs which make up the systems in the body. Myocytes are heart cells that form the organs called the heart which is part of the cardiovascular system. If there are an abnormally large number of damaged cells in a tissue or organ then we have disease. If we replace the damaged cells then we don’t have disease, we have a normal healthy tissue or organ.
